What could be better than steamed buns on a cold day?

As a former journalist for daily newspapers, I’ve learned that all you can hope for is that your story is an accurate reflection of what happens on a given day. It’s a snapshot, that’s all. By tomorrow, everything may have changed completely.

I live in Beijing, where change seems to occur at a faster rate than in other places. I’m constantly fascinated by both the everydayness, and the you-don’t-see-that-every-dayness of China. So I take pictures, and post them. One picture a day. No more, no less.

    Steamed 馒头 Man tou with nothing but white flour, yeast, salt and sugar; some are sprinkled with scallion.

    Only yesterday, I was just thinking to myself when I walked pass this robust old man with a transparent bag full of plain man tou. I grew up on soap noodles; pork congee; bacon and eggs, etc for breakfast with the idea that it is the most important meal of the day. So how is it that most traditional Chinese folks prefer plain rice porridge and plain man tou for breakfast? Many of these folks are the ones you’ll see working out in parks early in the morning too. Their advice if you asked them what kept them looking so young and full of vitality, they will tell you this, eat plain and ight in the morning, have a simple lunch and enjoy a hardy family dinner. Afternoon nap is very important, and be OPEN HEARTED -i.e. be positive.
