How iPhone’s Siri Really Works

I purchased an iPhone 4S a few weeks ago and have gotten to know Siri pretty well since that time. It’s great to be able to dictate an email rather than fumble with those tiny letters on the screen and so far, she’s been perfect as far as accuracy. It’s been remarkably easy to ask her to set up appointments, take notes and let my wife know I’m caught in traffic.  But there’s only so much she can do, as shown in the following video, which is also subtitled in Chinese as an added bonus.

    So far, I like it. Siri understands most of what I say, probably over 90% and it’s much easier dictating an email than typing it with those little keys. I don’t have any problem with battery life though I also don’t have the phone set up to “push” email as soon as it is sent, which is really a “pull” since the phone contacts the server to download. I have it set at one hour while in sleep mode. That saves a lot of power.

    I can’t compare it to previous iPhones since this is the first one I’ve owned. I’ve taken the iPhone introductory course and learned a few tricks that way. The camera is good and I’ve already used it a few times.

    The key feature that pushed me towards the iPhone was synchronicity. I have a MacBook Pro and will later add an iPad because sales presentations are just going that way in general. All three can ‘talk’ to each other. No other platform has that functionality. Within the Droid family, each manufacturer has massaged the OS to their custom settings, so a Droid from Samsung isn’t compatible with a Droid from Motorola. Droid isn’t used on computers and their tablets have been a disaster. Windows is strong on the PC level but weak on phones and tablets. For my needs, the Apple commonality works the best.

    If you don’t need that synchronicity, then you’d have to look at other features. All electronic devices have strengths and weaknesses, the key is to match the strengths with what you need. This Apple/Droid/MSFT flame war stuff is immature and just shows how little the flamers understand technology. But it also illustrates how effective marketing can be when people get all emotional about electronics when there is no reason to do so. Sell the sizzle, not the steak. ;)

    I finally bought a smart phone, Lumia 710. I am an ardent user of Nokia though did once get fancy into the Korean star pretty face elegantly flipping their phone in those series, but that LG phone last me less than 2 years, I told myself no more Korean stuff. However the trend lately didn’t offer much choice, most will go for IOS iphone or Android Samsung, I am reluctant for either because of the impression what the Chinese call ‘俗’ (not cool? a similar analogy is the affluent Chinese claim that even a maid nowadays use LV) until Nokia come up with Lumia series, and that’s cool. :)

    I am not really a tech enthusiast, I just want a Phone equip with GPS, and game like Reversi and Chinese Chess, good calculator and unit converter plus dictionary, access email, blog (PRS and HH) and most importantly, eReader and music because many Chinese website have unlimited of books and songs for download, the midrange 1.4 GHz with 8GB storage Lumia 710 is good enough for my liking and purpose, with decent price.

    However I might have to agree with Steve on the sync part, I am not sure how exactly other phones work but WP seems a bit complicated, I sync my contact with outlook via Windows Live, while music, photo and video via Zune and Office document through SkyDrive, this was really a painful learning process that searching high low for guide and tips, in fact I don’t even have a single friend that use a WP phone and make it harder for me. Whew! Perhaps I am too old for a smart phone.

    Just curious, can Nokia survive?
